Places I have been this week

ROOT DOWN
1600 W. 33rd
303-993-4200

Root Down continues to amazing with food that is so unique and marvelous. Every dish brings great taste. The salad special, risotto, lamb sliders, sweet potato fries, chicken. And steak. Wow!

Root Down remains tops in Denver dining. This is the first restaurant of Justin Cucci, the genius behind Edible Beats and still a favorite of all. Always a terrific soup or two and then creativity takes over with salads, small plates and entrees that please all. Some favorite are always angels on horseback, the risotto or gnocchi of the menu, scallops, and of course their signature veggie or lamb sliders. Entrees of fish, tofu, steak, lamb, and chicken rock. It’s always a special night and wonderful time.

SATCHEL’S ON 6TH
1710 E. 6th Ave
303-399-2560

Satchel’s is a hot spot on 6th. Mobbed with great food and feel. Super soup, fab burger with duck fat fries and divine duck confit.

‘Satchel’s is one room that oozes energy!! The focal bar covers most the room as it circles the space with booths and tables throughout the area. You might not even notice décor as people watching is a must as every space is taken with happy diners. It is a neighborhood treat. Some favorites are the soup of the day-this time an incredible rich, creamy parsnip puree that is decadent. There are mussels. Duck fat fries, calamari, some kale salad, calamari, and tortellini on the appetizer list. Large plates include a fish, steak, lamb, amazing duck confit and one awesome burger!! Thick and juicy topped with yum pickles, crispy pork belly and white cheddar mustard spread, all on a delicious bun, it is a must for burger lovers—and don’t forget the duck fat fries that accompany it. The wine and cocktail list is excellent, desserts rock, and it is just fun!

LITTLE OLLIE’S
2364E. 6th Ave
303-316-8888

Grammys and Little Ollie’s fun. Love the pad Thai and all. Little Ollie’s is a hangout for my sister-in-law and me after our movie day. The Chinese side-where there are tables and booths an always busy is wonderful-and the menu services both this room and O Bar-where there are high Tops around the focal bar-tvs are around-not blasting-and the place is terrific fun. Great soups, specials, and noodle and rice dishes-sushi-and even a fab hamburger and tuna burger with sweet potato fries make this a place for all tastes-and the servers are terrific too!! Fun wines make it eve better. See ya there-say hi if you do.

KAOS
1439 S. Pearl
303-733-5267

Pizza tasting – Kaos arugula and Caesar salads to start. Thin crust. Burnt edges nice toppings. Fun spot. On S Pearl in a little house, there are rooms with tables for dining-small spaces so intimate to a point-fun-there are fun paintings on the walls and a big counter in front as you enter. Salads to start, some apps, and a sandwich list that looked very interesting-but we came for pizza. The crust is thin which I like and the waiter explained they have a wood-burning oven when I inquired about the very burnt crust-he said they are but not always as much as the one we had. Loved the filling tastes and the bottom crust and you know what to expect in this style. There are wines—and pasta dishes too. It is a casual, neighborhood spot in a great hood and lots of carryout too.

BAR DOUGH
2227 W 32nd Ave
720-668-8506

Wow! a fabulous dinner at Bar Dough! the food-the clam pizza, and pasta with seafood are awesome-bartender fab, and wines too-not only extraordinary food and service-but fun too!!!

Bar dough is great to see- a gorgeous bar lines one wall with a community table down the center and seating around-white with touches of red and black-see the super pizza oven in the rear with an open kitchen and the scene is set. You will love the food. Start with great apps including fancy toast, an arugula salad to die for-but then-usually one picks a pizza or a pasta but you must try both. The clam pizza is awesome-clams out of the shell, white cheeses, and a thin crust with a touch of brown but not burnt-and then  the taliarini with squid ink pasta, calarian chile, mussels and squid and orange zest with spicy greens and parsley. Such a treat. Too much-well maybe yes but  all are so worth it. Service is amazing-bartenders and bar super great and fun!

BANG UP TO THE ELEPHANT
1310 Pearl

Yes. Bang up to the elephant is the name. Caribbean food and drink. Fin and good fare and drinks to match. The place is quite large and looks great. Enter a room where breakfast and coffee are served and then enter the main area. A huge bar on one side-lots of tile, white with a light green touch, wood backed booths, planter boxes up the wall and used as dividers, great lighting from the very high unfinished ceiling and community tables offer the feel of the beach. The cocktail list Is a dream for tiki type cocktails along with beer and a few wines, while the menu goes for the area as well. Lots of plantains and interesting apps with shrimp fritters, grilled pineapple chow and interesting chicken wings. The bowl of mussels and squid in a sorrel sauce and mangos hits the spot, and the bowl of chow Mein brings noodles with protein of choice. There are curries and rotis, and entrees of pimiento smoked chicken or pork. The cornbread even takes on the island taste with a pimiento flavor. There are many sandwiches, but the signature is bake and shark, deep fried and served on a bun with plantain chips. Service is great with very friendly and caring staff. Find a place to park and you’re in. Bang Up the Elephant is a big neighborhood hit for good reason

ULTREIA

Ultreia is wonderful-terrific food and service here-share all sorts of good food-and they are doing Restaurant Week and Valentine’s Day-and taking reservations!
