Centro Mexican Kitchen

Gabby Gourmet Centro Mexican KitchenCentro Mexican Kitchen sits on the corner at 9th and Pearl and, with its new chef and menu, is the place to be. Inside find a great bar, booths, and tables in the one room and an enclosed patio complete with bar, heat, tables, and in both spots a large crowd.

The décor is wood, tiles, brick, and casual Latin décor to set the scene. Chef Johnny Curiel comes from a Latino background having cooked in 29 areas of Mexico and raised in a family of chefs, and his menu shows the style of the authentic cuisine we so love; Fresh ingredients, unique flavors and presentation, and a flair for marrying flavors.

Start with avocado salsa, guacamole lamb barbacoa taquitos, and several salads including a Caesar. The scallop ceviche is the prize winner with sliced scallops marinated in lime, serranos, and sesame oil, served on a huge crispy tortilla. There are a variety of tacos, an enchilada, and burrito, buy go for the 8-hour smoked pork collar with cactus salad for a treat.

Grilled whole seabream is awesome with radicchio and Brussels sprout hash, salsa verde and pickled fennel. Meaty, tender, and the hash is a perfect accompaniment. Two sides you must try are a sweet corn salad with lime aioli and dehydrated mole, and seared carrots with Greek yogurt, candied walnuts, and fennel. Both are addictive. There are decadent desserts to end the meal.

The cocktails, beer, and wine list are terrific and service rocks. Centro is a perfect spot to get that Mexican food so much wanted—and needed—and a great spot for dining in Boulder.
