Blue Pan Pizza opens in Congress Park bringing a haven for pizza lovers of every ilk. It’s small, one room with a huge focal bar perfect for dining, and seating throughout the space. The “blue pan” name comes from the blue skillet used to bake the pizza. The décor is simple, but warm and inviting, as families, millennials, and seniors gather together. Blue Pan describes itself as Detroit style pizza and they do it perfectly. Detroit style means square with a thick deep-dish crust, crisp on the outside but chewy and soft under the gooey, delicious toppings. There are many to choose from, but two favorites are the Brooklyn Bridge with cheese, creamy ricotta, pepperoni, and sausage with the signature sauce, and the tomato pie with sweet tomato sauce, cheese, garlic, oregano, and olive oil—what pizza should be. There are many more options in pizza style if you prefer. Classic Italian is just that, or go for Chicago cracker thin, a huge round pie that is typically cut into squares to serve, and New York style which means a thin crust crisp that must be soft enough to fold to eat. All come with a huge variety of toppings including white pie. There are apps of meatballs, caprese, and bruschetta, and salads that include a Caesar and antipasto. The Magnolia salad of romaine with gorgonzola, candied walnuts, apple slices, and goat cheese brings great flavors and texture with house made balsamic vinaigrette. There is a kids’ menu for all the youngsters as well. The wine, beer, and cocktail list is terrific and complements the food. Service is friendly and helpful, and prices are affordable. Blue Pan is a terrific spot and great addition to the hood.
