Farm Wine Dine by Lonnie Metzler :
Last week I was honored to attend an event called Rock-a-Belly; hosted by Food For Thought, an organization focused on childhood hunger. The event catered to 600 people and featured musical guests, Chris Daniels & The Kings and the Hazel Miller Band. Some of Denver’s best restaurants, breweries and distilleries were also on display.
At a time when we are planning our Thanksgiving feast, many children from low-income families are going home from school knowing they won’t eat again until they return on Monday. Food For Thought aims to eliminate this problem. They provide a PowerSack to each student for them to take home every other weekend. Each PowerSack has enough food to feed a family of four 2 meals.
According to their website, Food For Thought targets schools where 90% or more of the students are eligible for free or reduced lunch programs (income of a family of four is less than $29K/year to qualify). the volunteers of Food For Thought help pick-up, pack and deliver PowerSacks to the children they serve. Food For Thought is a 100% volunteer program and 100% of all donations are used to buy food for the program.
Attendees, musicians, restaurateurs and drink masters gathered together to provide samples of their specialties to help raise money to fund Food For Thought’s PowerSacks for Denver’s hungry school children. This year Rock-a-Belly raised $100,000!
I truly had an great time knowing that it served so much more than a another fun night out!
